Genetic Testing
At Peak Psychiatry and Wellness we’ve partnered with GeneSight to provide genetic testing that analyzes a patient’s DNA to determine how they may respond to certain medications used to treat psychiatric conditions. The test looks at genetic variations that may affect a patient’s ability to metabolize certain medications, which can impact their effectiveness and the risk of side effects. The test results can help your psychiatric provider make more informed decisions about which medications to prescribe to their patients, including adjusting dosages or selecting alternative medications that may be more effective and have fewer side effects. Genetic testing can be especially helpful for patients who have had little to no success with past medications for psychiatric disorders.
We are also happy to provide MTHFR genetic testing which analyzes a patient’s DNA to determine whether they have a variation in the MTHFR gene.
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of folic acid, which is necessary for the production of neurotransmitters that regulate mood, such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. It has also been suggested that these variations may alter the response to certain antidepressants, making it less effective in these individuals. Variations in the MTHFR gene have been associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders, particularly depression. This test result can give your psychiatric provider further insight to provide you with a more personalized mental health treatment plan.
