Know your plan
What Aetna members should know
- Prior authorization: Aetna’s behavioral health precertification list covers services such as inpatient care, partial hospitalization, residential treatment, and TMS. Routine office visits and psychiatric evaluations are not on that list.
- Some plans differ: Aetna notes that some plans ask you to call a behavioral health number before care. If your card lists one, we help you check.
- Video visits: Aetna states that a telehealth session costs the same as an in-person office visit on plans that cover it.
- Coverage varies by employer: call the number on your Aetna member ID card to confirm your mental health benefits.
Washington law requires state-regulated health plans to cover medically necessary mental health care on the same terms as medical care, including deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket limits, and to pay for telehealth visits the same as in-person visits when the service is covered. Employer self-funded plans follow federal rules instead.
