What Medicare members should know
- What Part B covers: Medicare Part B covers outpatient mental health care, including psychiatric evaluations and medication management, and lists nurse practitioners among the providers who can deliver it.
- Your cost in 2026: after the Part B deductible of $283, you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. A supplement (Medigap) or other coverage may pay some or all of that.
- Telehealth from home: Medicare permanently covers mental health telehealth visits in your home. Starting in 2028, Medicare plans to require an in-person visit within 6 months before a new patient’s first mental health telehealth visit, with some exceptions. We will help you meet any requirement that applies.
- Referrals: with Original Medicare you usually do not need a referral. Medicare Advantage plans may require a referral or in-network provider, so we verify your plan before your first visit.
- Questions: call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), or the number on your Medicare Advantage card.
