Know your plan

What Premera Blue Cross members should know

  • Referrals: Premera’s 2026 member booklet states you do not need a referral for specialty care.
  • Prior authorization: Premera’s authorization list includes services such as psychological testing and inpatient mental health care. We check whether anything in your plan needs approval before your visit.
  • Video visits: Premera notes that members can get mental health care virtually or in person.
  • Out-of-state employer plan? A suitcase logo on your card means your plan includes BlueCard benefits. Some plans, such as EPOs, limit out-of-area care, so we confirm your coverage first.
  • Questions about your benefits: call the customer service number on your Premera ID card, or sign in to your Premera account and use Find a Doctor.

Washington law requires state-regulated health plans to cover medically necessary mental health care on the same terms as medical care, including deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket limits, and to pay for telehealth visits the same as in-person visits when the service is covered. Employer self-funded plans follow federal rules instead.
