Know your plan

What UnitedHealthcare / Optum members should know

  • Your card: UnitedHealthcare asks members to call the toll-free Mental Health phone number on their ID card. It also offers a Mental Health Directory at myuhc.com under Find a Provider.
  • Authorization: Optum notes that plans it administers require authorization or notification for specialty outpatient services and most inpatient services. We check what your plan requires.
  • Video visits: UnitedHealthcare notes that virtual visits may be covered in a similar way to an office visit.
  • Apple Health members: UnitedHealthcare Community Plan is one of Washington’s Apple Health plans and has its own rules.

Washington law requires state-regulated health plans to cover medically necessary mental health care on the same terms as medical care, including deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket limits, and to pay for telehealth visits the same as in-person visits when the service is covered. Employer self-funded plans follow federal rules instead.
