The short answer

What TriWest / VA Community Care members should know
- Referral first: TriWest requires an approved VA referral and authorization before an appointment can be scheduled. Ask your VA care team for a community care referral for psychiatric care.
- Who qualifies: you must be enrolled in VA care and meet at least one community care criterion. For mental health, that includes when VA cannot offer an appointment within a 20-day wait or a 30-minute average drive.
- Schedule within 90 days: if a referral is not scheduled within 90 days, it returns to the VA, so book soon after you are approved.
- Cost: the VA eliminated copays for the first three outpatient mental health visits each calendar year, including community care, through December 2027.
