What to expect at your first psychiatric evaluation
Booking a first psychiatric appointment can feel like a big step. Knowing what to expect makes it easier. Here is what typically happens at a first evaluation, how to prepare, and what you will leave with.
How long is it?
At Peak, a new patient evaluation is 60 minutes by secure video. That time lets us understand your story fully, not just your symptoms, without rushing.
What we will talk about
- What brings you in: the symptoms or concerns that led you to book, and how they affect daily life.
- Your history: when symptoms started, what has helped, and what has not.
- Past treatment: medications you have tried, doses, how long, and any side effects.
- Health and lifestyle: medical conditions, current medications, sleep, substance use, and stress.
- Family history: mental health conditions in close relatives, which can guide diagnosis and treatment.
- Your goals: what you want to feel or be able to do differently.
Some questions are personal, including questions about safety. These are routine, and you can always say if you are not ready to discuss something.
How to prepare
- A list of your current medications and doses, plus any you have tried before.
- Your insurance card (you upload it when you book).
- A few notes about your main concerns and questions.
- A quiet, private space with a good internet connection for your video visit.
- For teens 13 to 17, a parent or guardian joins part of the visit.
What you will leave with
By the end of the visit, you will have a clear picture of what may be going on and a plan for next steps. That may include starting or adjusting medication, lab work, testing such as GeneSight, therapy recommendations, and a follow-up visit. You are part of every decision.
What happens after
Follow-up visits are shorter and focus on how treatment is working. We adjust as needed and stay in touch about refills between visits. Learn more about telehealth medication management.
